Ask questions on office hours + participate in class + pay attention to the assignment grading rubric and u will be fine. Sometimes his feedback can be a bit vague but u can just go to OH to clarify more. Hes also funny during class i guess

Loved Butterfield! Ended with an A just by following instructions and asking questions in office hours. He's passionate about his teaching and genuinely cares for students. A little nit picky with grading and not always the clearest, but generally ok if you follow the rubric. In class work was very fun and engaging.

I don't get why everyone if seems to think he is a terrible grader. If you attend some office hours and show decent care in your work, he'll reward you with an A/A. Yes, he is picky with what he wants in his assignments but once he learns what he is looking for this class is an easy A/A-. Don't listen to the other reviews he's a good teacher

Worst professor at Questrom. I highly recommend you do your research on the professors before taking this class because the grading is completely subjective. Butterfield will take points off for things that aren't mentioned in his rubric.

Enjoyed taking his class. While he may be picky when it comes to grading, it's nothing unmanageable. Follow the rubric and what he says in class and you will get a good grade. Very nice and genuine guy as well. SM275 is just one of the most poorly constructed classes in Questrom, in my opinion.

He is the most terrible professor in my whole life. His grading does not make any sense. Students followed all of his requirements, made tons of effort, went to his office hours but still gave B to most of students. He just grades like he does not give any sh*t and randomly grades it. His class makes students lose their confidence.

The instructions for the assignments were very unclear. The format for each assignment was very weird and unconventional; no one writes like that in the real world. I did everything by the rubric and still got a B. Never taking a class with Butterfield ever again.

I think that the problem lies with the course of SM275 and its structure, rather than with Professor Butterfield himself. He teaches content in an engaging manner however it is almost impossible to get anything above a B+. His feedback isn't the clearest, but if you go to his office hours he will elaborate and it and try and make you improve.

This course needs to be heavily restructured. I felt like I gained nothing from this class. He is the course coordinator so he takes everything very seriously. He is very unclear about what he wants and is not specific on why he gave you the grade he did. No matter what you do you'll get a B. Take someone else and save yourself!

He is useless. Instruction provided in class are very unclear. If you have to take him and there's no other option - keep going to his office hours as much as you can. Otherwise TA's and the rubric would not help much.

Do you want to be confused and feel like you have learned nothing, and instead, have your confidence destroyed? Then this is the course for you. Absolute worse class ever. The application of inductive and deductive reasoning is robotic and unpractical. If you write emails like his rubrics requires in the real world, you will be seen as a weirdo.

One of the best professors I have ever had. There are a lot of papers and presentations so you will have to work for your grade. His rubric is very specific and hes picky about a lot of things, but if you do everything he asks, he will give you a good grade.

Professor Butterfield is great at creating activities that allows his students to better grasp the material they are learning. He is always willing and able to help, and he is always quick to respond. I recommend office hours too. This class is very very difficult but also very rewarding.

SM275 is a poorly developed class but Professor Butterfield made it difficult to take seriously. If you expect to follow the rubric and get an A do not take his class. His grading rigor varied a lot based on the assignment which meant you could put in 0 effort on some assignments and get an A and a lot on another and get a B-. Take someone else.
